Julian’s Journey Back to Fitness
Julian is an Ultra Runner who found his way to YOP following an injury. This is Julian’s story, in his own words.
“YOP was recommended to me by a mate’s friend called Matt. Matt had to pull out of the Cape Wrath, 8 day, 400km Ultra in Scotland near the end, due to injury. After physiotherapy and a guided training program from YOP, Matt smashed the Cape Wrath Ultra the following year.
I completed the York marathon in October 2024 but sustained a very painful injury to my right hip in the process. I had a diagnosis and treatment at YOP which corrected the injury. I then followed guided, progressive training programmes for strengthening and conditioning to get me in shape to complete the Tyne Bridges to Boundaries Ultra in March 2025, and the Pilgrim’s Ultra 100k in September 2025.
YOP wrote training programmes for me to follow at home as I was running four times a week and doing strengthening and conditioning two to three times a week. I attended YOP once a week, 7am to 8am on a Wednesday morning and trained at home in my garage. I found it important to attend YOP once a week so that I could discuss my progress and check that I was doing the exercises in the correct way. There were many stretches and exercises I was doing before attending YOP that I was not doing correctly. Niggles could also be discussed and remedies provided.
For the last six months I have had a sports massage at YOP once a month which is good for conditioning and teasing out knots in muscles. I find it useful to get feedback on the condition of the muscles; sometimes additional stretching and rollering is recommended to me, to do at home, when some muscle groups are tight. YOP also have recommended adjustments to my running programme which have proved to be effective in preventing overtraining.
I have completed The Tyne Bridges and Pilgrim’s Ultras (43% DNF) and I am now in a recovery programme to get me in shape to start training for the Bamburgh Castle to Edinburgh Castle 100 mile Ultra in early July 2026. I am 60 years old. I could not achieve these goals without the great service YOP provides.” Julian Hindle
